Expression of Interest for Field Officers and Senior Field Officers in Kenya

About the Role:
PxD is building a pool of Field Officers and Senior Field Officers for agricultural research surveys in Kenya. Roles are project-based and will open as new survey rounds begin, ahead of upcoming growing seasons.
Typical Work Includes:
• Listing surveys: identifying farmers who plan to grow target crops (for example, tomatoes or potatoes).
Baseline surveys: interviewing selected farmers.
• Farmer recruitment: helping recruit lead farmers and other farmers in study villages.
• Field Officers visit farmers, recruit them, and conduct interviews. Senior Field Officers lead teams of Field Officers and make sure all work follows the study protocol.
Where We Work:
Our current work is in Nyandarua, Laikipia, Kirinyaga, Machakos, Embu, Kajiado and Nakuru counties. Future studies may cover other counties in Kenya, so please tell us where you are based and where you are willing to work.
Key Responsibilities:
Field Officers
• Visit study villages and work with village elders to identify farmers for the listing survey
• Collect nominations of trusted farmers, then screen nominees in person against the selection criteria
• Recruit lead farmers and other farmers following the agreed procedure
• Explain the study, the time commitment, and what lead farmers are expected to do, clearly and honestly, including that the lead farmer role is unpaid
• Conduct in-person listing and baseline interviews on a tablet using SurveyCTO, reading the consent script and recording each farmer's decision correctly
• Collect GPS data for farmers' plots where required
• Record all information accurately, on time and confidentially
• Follow the study protocol closely and report any problems to your Senior Field Officer quickly
• Attend trainings and regular check-ins
Senior Field Officers
• Perform Field Officer tasks when needed
• Guide and support Field Officers day-to-day and run regular check-ins
• Track team progress against targets, such as farmers listed and surveys completed per village
• Review records and submitted data for completeness and errors, and follow up with the team on data quality issues
• Spot and report problems early, such as villages falling behind or protocol steps being skipped
• Escalate issues and send regular updates to the Field Manager and Research team
• Help train and coach Field Officers
What We're Looking For:
All candidates
• Diploma in a relevant field
• At least 1 year of field data collection experience, ideally in agricultural surveys, listing surveys, field observations, or similar community-level work with farmers
• Skill with SurveyCTO or a similar digital data collection platform, including entering and submitting data on a smartphone or tablet
• Close attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality data
• Good organization and reporting skills
• Good spoken and written English
• Ability to speak the main local language of the study area (strongly preferred)
• Willingness to travel to farms across multiple clusters
• Good judgment, clear communication, and the confidence to give constructive feedback
Senior Field Officers (in addition to the above)
• Experience managing a field team (required)
Terms of Engagement:
These roles do not include a per diem or accommodation allowance, but we cover work-related transport and communication costs. Candidates must be willing to work wherever they are posted on these terms, so applicants based in or near the study areas are encouraged to apply.
