ABOUT THE KENYA SCHOOL OF LAW
The Kenya School of Law is a public legal education provider responsible for professional legal training as an agent of the Government. Its core functions are set out in section 4 of the Kenya School of Law Act, Cap 16C. The School is looking for a committed, dynamic and result-oriented leader to head its strong team and help it achieve its vision of being "A centre of excellence in professional legal training, research and consultancy". The ideal candidate is an independent, visionary and strategic thinker who is customer-oriented and can drive the organisational transformation the School wants.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The position is established under section 14 of the Kenya School of Law Act, which provides for a Director appointed by the Board through a competitive recruitment process, who is the Chief Executive Officer of the School and Secretary to the Board.
The Director implements the Board's decisions in a result-oriented and timely way to achieve the School's goals, objectives and performance targets. As head of the organisation, the Director is administratively and functionally responsible to the Board for strategy, policy compliance and operations, in line with the School's strategic mission, vision and corporate values.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership and strategy
- Provide strategic leadership in line with the School's statutory mandate.
- Advise the Board on strategy to achieve the School's mandate under the Kenya School of Law Act, Chapter 16C.
- Implement policies, regulations and strategies to achieve the School's objectives.
- Oversee the implementation of corporate programmes.
- Foster a culture of ethical practice and good governance.

Working with the Board
- Serve as Secretary to the Board and as the link between the Board and Management.
- Implement Board decisions.
- Make sure Board papers are properly written and sent to Board members in good time.

Finance, risk and compliance
- Ensure compliance with approved annual budgets.
- Establish and implement proper internal controls.
- Implement effective risk management and business continuity plans.
- Ensure compliance with all statutory obligations and legal and regulatory requirements, including responsibilities under the Public Finance Management Act and the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act.

People, resources and operations
- Recruit and retain qualified staff.
- Improve efficiency in service delivery and discipline among staff.
- Determine requirements for, and manage, the School's human, financial, information and physical resources to meet its mission, goals and strategic plans.
- Ensure the safety and proper use of all the School's movable and immovable assets.
- Keep safe custody of the seal and other relevant documents.
- Conduct all examinations within the School's mandate.

REQUIREMENTS
For appointment to this grade, you must have:
- At least fifteen (15) years' relevant work experience, ten (10) of them at senior management level.
- A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from an institution prescribed or recognised by the Council of Legal Education.
- A Master of Laws (LL.M) from an institution prescribed or recognised by the Council of Legal Education.
- A Doctorate (PhD) in Law from an institution prescribed or recognised by the Council of Legal Education.
- A Post-graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
- Admission as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, with a current practising certificate.
- At least two publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Proficiency in computer applications.

- A leadership course of at least four (4) weeks from a recognised institution.
